To help us respond faster, please include your tvOS version, your Synology model and DSM/Surveillance Station version, and a description of what you were doing when the issue occurred.
Getting started
NasCam connects your Apple TV directly to a Synology NAS running Surveillance Station. Before you begin, make sure you have:
- An Apple TV (4th generation or later) running tvOS 17 or later.
- A Synology NAS with Surveillance Station installed and at least one camera added.
- A DSM user account that has permission to view your cameras.
- Your Apple TV and NAS reachable on the same network (or a remote connection you’ve set up yourself).
Then:
- Install NasCam from the App Store on your Apple TV.
- Open the app and enter your NAS address (local IP, hostname, or QuickConnect ID) and port.
- Sign in with your DSM username and password. Approve the two-factor prompt if your account uses 2FA.
- Your cameras appear automatically — select any feed to go full screen, or browse recorded events.
Connecting to your NAS
A few tips for a reliable connection:
- Address: On your home network, the local IP of your NAS (for example
192.168.1.20) is usually the most reliable. You can find it in DSM under Control Panel → Network. - Port: Use your DSM port (default
5000for HTTP or5001for HTTPS). If you’ve changed it, enter your custom port. - Permissions: The signed-in DSM user needs access to Surveillance Station and to the specific cameras you want to view.
- Remote viewing: To watch away from home, set up secure remote access to your NAS yourself (VPN or Synology QuickConnect). NasCam does not proxy your video through any external service.
Troubleshooting
The app can’t connect to my NAS
Confirm your Apple TV and NAS are on the same network, double-check the address and port, and make sure DSM is reachable from a browser on the same network. If you use HTTPS with a self-signed certificate, try the HTTP port to confirm connectivity first.
A camera feed is black or won’t load
Verify the camera is online and recording in Surveillance Station itself. Very high-bitrate or unusual codecs can be demanding on Apple TV — try lowering the camera’s stream resolution or bitrate in Surveillance Station, and confirm the DSM user has permission for that camera.
Two-factor authentication isn’t working
If your DSM account uses 2FA, NasCam will prompt for the six-digit code from your authenticator app. Make sure your device clock is accurate and that the code hasn’t expired, then re-enter it. If you repeatedly fail, generate a fresh code and try again.
Live view stutters or lags
This is usually a network or bitrate issue. A wired Ethernet connection to the Apple TV helps significantly. In Surveillance Station, consider configuring a lower-resolution secondary stream for smoother multi-camera viewing.
Recorded events are missing
NasCam shows the recordings stored on your NAS. If events are missing, check your recording schedule, motion-detection settings, and storage retention in Surveillance Station — NasCam only displays what your NAS has actually saved.
